The Potter's House began in Prescott, Arizona in 1970 by Pastor Wayman Mitchell. The "Jesus People Movement" was sweeping America and multitudes of young people were being profoundly saved and converted to Christ. While many of the traditional churches closed their doors to the long-haired, denim clad hippies, Pastor Wayman Mitchell received them with open arms.
Pastor Mitchell’s solid grounding in the word of God and his passion to take the Gospel into all the world was soon imparted into the hearts of many zealous new converts. Within a few years, several young couples were launched into surrounding cities to pioneer new churches. Today there are over 2,000 churches directly linked to this ministry.
In 1973, one of those couples were sent into Tempe, Arizona to begin a new church, following the pattern that had been set in Prescott, Arizona. From the beginning, the emphasis was on world evangelism, discipleship, and church planting.
In 1983, Rick and Kathy Buchholz, a couple from the Tempe congregation, were sent to San Diego, California to pioneer our church. The current Pastor is Joe Rice. We continue to emphasize world evangelism, discipleship and church planting just as our Mother Church and their Mother church have for more than 40 years!
